Jerry Rice, Greg Maddux and Charles Barkley are among the greatest to play their sports, but this weekend, they will face another all-time great where she has home-field advantage.
Annika Sorenstam, arguably the greatest female golfer ever, will be taking on more than 80 male athletes and celebrities in the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament at the Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course, golfing from the same tees as the men.
Sorenstam, joined by the Golf Channel’s Lisa Cornwell (The Golf Channel’s Holly Sonders is no longer listed in the field) and two-time Olympic hockey silver medalist Hilary Knight as the only women in the field, won 72 LPGA Tour events, including 10 majors. She’s listed as a 2-1 favorite, according to Harrah’s.
“Everything is setting up like a big championship,” Sorenstam said during a July 9 media conference call. “I’m excited to be here. I’ve been practicing a little, but I really haven’t been on the golf course too much this year. It feels great to be out here, really starting to play a little bit.”
